It is common in China for a client to engage a law firm to act as its legal counsel under a retainer arrangement. Usually the engagement agreement will be renewed every year. During the period of the retainer, the legal counsel will deal with the client’s legal affairs, normally consultations, contracts drafting and review, and Chinese law training, in exchange for a fixed fee. Most retainer arrangements will exclude significant legal work which usually takes more than 3 hours. For example, litigation and arbitration cases, negotiations of big projects, key contracts drafting and review will require a separate engagement agreement. Such attorney-client relationship makes the client convenient to consult lawyers and it does not need to negotiate with the lawyers about the legal costs case by case.

Different from traditional Chinese law firms, YUNYA operates an English-style system under which lawyers are organized according to their specialty. Usually, the partners will be the legal counsel to the client who will coordinate YUNYA lawyers to provide good quality and affordable services.
